The film “Bob Marley: One Love” is released in theaters on February 14. It traces the life of the reggae legend. On this occasion, the 20 Hours looks at this music icon, who was also a spokesperson for minorities during his career.

King of reggae and prophet of the oppressed, Bob Marley knew how to take on all the roles. He offered the whole world music from the Jamaican ghetto, and without ever getting involved in politics, he became a spokesperson for minorities. His very first guitar was a “cigar box guitar“, a guitar made with next to nothing: a can of oil or a box of cigars, a broom handle and a few electrical wires. This concept came from American blues players.

Football, another passion of Bob Marley

In the 1970s, gangs ravaged Jamaica. On December 3, 1976, the pacifist Bob Marley was overtaken by this violence. A commando bursts into rehearsal and opens fire. Bob Marley is only injured in his left arm. He will still give a concert planned three days later, in the name of the reconciliation of the Jamaican people. Football was Bob Marley’s other passion. It gave him the same feeling of freedom as in music, said the man who had dreamed of being a professional footballer. Before each concert, he always planned a match with local teams.
