Museum für Stadtgeschichte von Breisach am Rhein

Museum für Stadtgeschichte

The town museum is housed in the ‘Rheintor’, built in the second half of the 17th century by the French architect Jacques Tarade according to plans by Vauban, and one of the most beautiful fortress entrances in Europe.

Exhibits, models, pictures and documents vividly tell the more than 4000 years of settlement history in Breisach, from the Stone Age to the present day.

Main themes include the Münsterberg of Breisach as the seat of a Celtic prince, Breisach in Roman times (due to the documented visit of Emperor Valentinian I in 369, Breisach is the only “Roman imperial city” in Baden- Württemberg), Breisach as an important place in the High Middle Ages and one of the largest and most modern fortifications in the 17th and 18th century.

Other areas are dedicated to St. Stephansmünster (with exhibits from the cathedral treasury), the many monasteries of yesteryear, the castle built by the Zähringers and destroyed in the 18th century, the garrison town (1893- 1919) and the destruction of 1945.

Special exhibitions mainly deal with subjects related to the recent history of the city (19th / 20th). At the Rheintor there is also the “Museumsstüble” gastronomic service with a terrace by the romantic swan pond.
