One of the men accused of the murder of Meriem Boundaoui, this teenager shot dead during a shooting two years ago in Montreal failed on Wednesday to obtain her provisional release. Judge Eric Downs points out in his decision that “this gratuitous gun violence shocked the population”.
“It must be said that armed violence has increased significantly in Montreal. The aberrant ease with which some obtain weapons and use them shakes the community,” the judge said in his 64-page judgment, a handful of paragraphs of which are not subject to a publication ban.
Aymane Bouadi, a 27-year-old Montrealer, will therefore remain detained until the end of his trial for first degree murder and four attempted murders. Note that his co-accused, Salim Touaibi, was not targeted by this request and remains detained.
Quebec was outraged by the death of Meriem Boundaoui in February 2021. The 15-year-old girl was shot during a “drive-by shooting” near the Jean-Talon and Valdombre intersection, in the borough of Saint-Leonard.
