The young man found guilty of killing 16-year-old Jannai Dopwell after school three years ago was sentenced to six years.
The murderer, who cannot be named since he was a teenager at the time of the crime, received a six-year sentence in closed custody on Monday. The maximum sentence provided by law for juveniles is seven years. The Crown had requested that the accused be subject to an adult sentence, but Judge Anne Émond of the Superior Court considered that the accused lacked maturity and had made significant rehabilitation efforts during his detention.
The young man was accused of stabbing to death Jannai Dopwell, 16, after classes near Coronation school, in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Montreal in 2021. He was found guilty of second degree murder last winter.
The victim had been pepper-sprayed by another man before being stabbed several times by the young murderer.
An hour later, he filmed himself celebrating the murder. This video was broadcast on social networks. He was arrested in Ottawa in the following days.
