In some communities, owners leave their homes abandoned and in disrepair. Municipalities must take charge of security work.

In Confolens (Charente), an abandoned building threatened to collapse onto the public highway. For five years, the town hall has sought to contact the English owner. “It’s maybe 30, 40, 50 letters”, indicates Jean-Noël Dupré, mayor of Confolens. The municipality obtained the demolition of the house, at the taxpayer’s expense. The neighbors are relieved. These private buildings, in decay or ruins, must be secured, often by the town hall.

A bill against degraded housing adopted in the Senate

In Beaujeu (Rhône). The mayor, Sylvain Sotton, must manage three outstanding files. “If a wall ever falls on a person who is passing, I am criminally responsible”, he explains. He had the structure of a house consolidated. In the town, a building will be destroyed. The town hall was in contact with the owner but had to take over because she was insolvent. A bill against degraded housing was adopted in the Senate. Its aim is to facilitate expropriation procedures.
