Montrealers will go to the polls today and tomorrow to elect the one who will lead the City for the next four years. To see it clearly after 52 days of the election campaign, here is a summary of the flagship promises of the three main parties.
Montreal project
Build 60,000 affordable housing units in 10 years. To do this, reserve $ 800 million over the next decade to acquire land in the metropolis using the right of pre-emption and lend them long-term to non-profit organizations and private developers.
Make public transportation free for seniors. Reduce the price of transport tickets by 50% for 12 to 17 year olds. Set up a “Métrobus” on Boulevard Henri-Bourassa, in the north of the island of Montreal, to serve three boroughs.
Develop a large park in the east of the island of Montreal and add 230 hectares of protected areas on the island.
Fund mixed teams of social workers to fight crime. Inject $ 110 million over four years to ensure public safety, in addition to the SPVM’s annual budget.
Revive the downtown area by perpetuating free on-street parking in the evenings and weekends during the month of December. Improve the greening of the sector with new public places and parks.
Limit the increase in municipal taxes to 2% in 2022. Add a tax on foreign residential real estate investments and another on display. Extend the application of the property tax to outdoor commercial parking lots.
Together Montreal
Hire 250 additional police officers during the first 100 days of a warrant. Launch a call for tenders to provide all police officers with portable cameras. Double the strength of mixed squads.
Build 50,000 homes “of all types” in four years. Abolish the Regulation for a mixed metropolis and replace it with more “flexible” measures.
Install additional closed garbage cans in parks and on main arteries. Increase the frequency of garbage collections in green spaces during the summer. Establish a rat control plan.
Make public transit free for Montrealers 65 and over. Extend the blue metro line from Saint-Michel to Anjou. Create a transport link between Lachine and downtown. Extend the orange metro line to Bois-Franc.
Limit truck traffic in the streets of Montreal by controlling delivery schedules. Host a trucking summit.
Cap the increase in municipal taxes at 2% in 2022. Tax owners of parking lots over 500 m2 throughout Montreal within five years, unless they develop them in an ecological way.
Montreal Movement
Hold a referendum on the linguistic status of the metropolis in order to endow the city with a bilingual status.
Creation of a “city-state” status for Montreal in order to increase the powers and autonomy of the municipality in matters of immigration, health and education.
Reduce the budget of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) and redirect the sums towards community interventions and investments in social housing.
