The city of Paris was chosen to host the 2023 edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards, on Sunday November 5 at the Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte, in Seine-Saint-Denis.
It was a first for France in 28 years. Paris was to host the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony at the Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte in Seine-Saint-Denis, a year after the last edition in Düsseldorf. “Given the volatility of global events, we have decided not to host the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all corners of the world to give life at this show“, explained MTV in a press release published Thursday, October 19.
The American channel explained that the European version of its MTV Video Music Awards ceremony will be scheduled again in November 2024, adding that voting was continuing and that the winners would receive their prize. “As we watch devastating events continue in Israel and Gaza, the time does not seem right for global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, this is a time to mourn“, continues MTV.
Last French edition in 1995
The last edition of the MTV EMAs had not taken place in Paris since 1995. It was the second ceremony since its creation, presented at the time by the fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier. French artists to have won an award are rare. It’s Kyo, the pop-rock group from the 2000s, who won the EMA for Best French Artist, a category inaugurated in 2003. Diam’s, Jenifer, Shaka Ponk, Orelsan and Indila are the others rewarded in this category.

The 2023 MTV EMAs were scheduled to be broadcast live on MTV in more than 150 countries. “Paris is a rich cultural city, recognized around the world for its artists, art and fashion. For this new edition, the greatest local and international talents will join fans from around the world for an exceptional musical experience. That only MTV can deliver“, announced Bruce Gillmer, producer and executive vice president of talent and music programming for MTV, in a press release published on May 11, 2023.
Only two French artists have won awards in international categories. These are the electronic music group Justice and star DJ David Guetta. The artist was also scheduled to perform on stage with Anne-Marie and Coi Leray to perform their hit the tube Baby Don’t Hurt Me.
