MPs hold emergency climate and disaster debate in BC

The House of Commons is holding an emergency debate on Wednesday evening on climate change and the devastating flooding in British Columbia. Discussions should focus on the country’s lack of preparation to face the consequences of climate change.

This request for an emergency debate, granted by President Anthony Rota, was supported by the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and the Green Party, although there were differences on what topics each wanted to see at heart. of the debate.

Greens MP Elizabeth May and NDP Richard Cannings wanted to debate the broader climate emergency with a special focus on the damage done in British Columbia this year, including flooding, wildfires and the Dome of Heat in last summer.

Conservative Ed Fast, whose riding of Abbotsford has been hit hard, wanted to limit discussions to events in his province.

An atmospheric river dropped 300mm of rain over part of southern B.C. about ten days ago, caused deadly flooding and mudslides, killing at least four people and devastating the road network. Even cutting off the Vancouver area from the rest of the country.
