The Canadian police carried out the first arrests of leaders of the anti-sanitary measures movement on Thursday, February 17 in the evening, which have been blocking the streets of Ottawa for almost three weeks. Tamara Lich, one of the organizers of the “freedom convoy”, was arrested by the police along with another leader, Chris Barber.

“If you want to leave on your own, now is the time”had launched to the demonstrators in the afternoon the acting chief of the police of Ottawa, warning that this weekend would be “very different from the last three”. He also said he was ready to “employ certain techniques not commonly seen in Ottawa”.

Blocked bank accounts

For his part, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau felt that this challenge no longer had anything “peaceful”, during a debate in the House of Commons. To add to the pressure, the finance minister also said that “individual and corporate bank accounts” linked to the blockage had been frozen.

The city of Ottawa, the province of Ontario and the whole of Canada are under a state of emergency because of this protest movement, party of the opposition of truckers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to cross the border between Canada and the United States. The movement has spread in recent weeks to all health measures and, for many demonstrators, to a rejection of the government of Justin Trudeau.
