Moutet in the second round, Rublev erases Isner … What to remember from Tuesday’s matches

The Rolex Paris Masters continues at Bercy with the final entries and the start of the second round on Tuesday, November 1. After Gilles Simon’s heroic match on Monday, the other French representatives are on the courts. Corentin Moutet notably won his qualification for the second round by dominating Borna Coric. For his part, the Italian Fabio Fognini took his revenge on Arthur Fils, who had beaten him in qualifying.

Corentin Moutet shaken but qualified, not Arthur Rinderknech

Corentin Moutet fought hard to secure his qualification. Manhandled by Borna Coric, the French, from qualifying, ended up overthrowing the Croatian to win in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4), in 2:38. Dominated from the start of the match, Moutet let the first set slip away before raising the level, saving 6 of the 7 break points obtained by his opponent, and pocketing the last two sets. He will challenge Britain’s Cameron Norrie, seeded No. 12, in the next round.

The day has less smiled on the new number 1 tricolor Arthur Rinderknech. The 27-year-old was no match for Jack Draper (6-3, 6-4). Weighed down by his many errors (20 unforced errors against 9 for his opponent), Rinderknech (42nd at the ATP) failed to get to the level of the Briton, 45th in the world. The latter will find Frances Tiafoe in the second round.

Andrey Rublev breaks his curse against John Isner

Rublev finally found the solution. After three defeats in a row in their first three head-to-head meetings, the young Russian offered himself a great victory against the American giants (6-2, 6-3). Much better, Rublev dispatched the meeting in just over an hour of play, facing a barely serving Isner (65% success only on his first serve). First qualified for the round of 16, in search of his ticket for the Masters at the end of the year (in the fight with Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Hubert Hurkacz), the 7th player in the world must wait for the results of the matches between Hubert Hurkacz, Adrian Mannarino, Holger Rune and Stan Wawrinka to know his future opponent.

Fabio Fognini takes his revenge on Arthur Fils

An air of déjà vu. Fabio Fognini and Arthur Fils met on the courts of the Accor Arena, just a few days after their last opposition. The two players had indeed faced each other in qualifying on October 30, and the duel had turned to the advantage of the young Frenchman, who had won his ticket for his first ATP tournament.

But the Italian had the opportunity to take his revenge. Drafted as a “lucky loser” after the retirement of Matteo Berrittini, he found Fils in the main draw. This time, Fognini emerged victorious (7-6[6-5]6-7[4-7], 6-2), after a long fight. He will face the winner of the match between Botic van de Zandschulp and Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.
