Scientists carried out an expedition to Mont Blanc to measure it. They announced their results on Thursday October 5. Mont Blanc has decreased by 2.22 meters in two years, but global warming is not the cause of this decrease.
With its immaculate whiteness, its chiseled crest, Mont Blanc is the roof of Europe. In September, an expedition of scientists set off to take measurements. This year, the measurement of Mont Blanc was 4,805.59 meters, they announced on Thursday October 5. It is 2.22 meters less than in 2021.
Ultramodern tools
The measurement is very precise. The team of scientists included surveyors, mountain guides and glaciologists with tools ultra-modern. In particular, they used a drone to analyze the evolution of the volume of snow. “It fluctuates depending on the winds, and therefore, depending on the weather conditions of winter and summer just before, we have conditions, shapes that can change”explains Farouk Kaddedsurveying engineer. Contrary to popular belief, global warming is not the cause of this decline, but scientists remain cautious. The next measurement campaign will take place in 2025.
