Mount Royal | Hello 2024… and winter sports!

Hundreds of Montrealers and tourists gathered at the summit of Mount Royal on Monday to welcome the new year. With family, friends or lovers, they took advantage of one of the rare snowy places in the metropolis and even a few rays of sunshine.

The Chatron family was there to enjoy the view, a walk on the mountain and… to digest the New Year’s Eve meal! A moment of reunion for this family whose members live partly in Montreal and partly in Paris.

Be careful, crampons. The trails were partly icy on the mountain, but this did not discourage visitors. A small crowd walked Monday under trees decorated with a layer of frost.

Gustave, his mother, Michelle, and their 13-month-old Labernese, Borax, were there to “enjoy the good weather”. Good weather ? The sun welcomed Montrealers on Monday morning. Welcome rays after nine days under the clouds in the metropolis, according to Dominic Martel, meteorologist with Environment Canada. The clearing should continue this Tuesday.

A little further away, a couple from Laval came to greet the horses of the cavalry of the Police Department of the City of Montreal. The imposing Canadians munched on hay and put on a show for the pleasure of the curious.

Who said you can’t skate in Montreal? The refrigerated skating rink at Lac aux Castors brought joy to dozens of people on Monday. On the mountain heights, snow was everywhere. A white decor almost forgotten in the rest of the metropolis.

Sabrina, Malika and Vénus, aged 13, almost 14 and 14 respectively, came to enjoy the ice rink on Monday. Their hope for 2024? “Succeed in school, to begin with!” “, launched Sabrina. The three teenagers, however, preferred not to be photographed.

A little further on, well-packed snow made it possible to slide at full speed. Nancy Daccache, her two children, her sister-in-law and friends discovered the joys of Mount Royal for the first time in winter.

A winter outing is never complete without a little something warm. If the majority of businesses were closed on this 1er January, the gnocchi bar at Drogheria Fine on Fairmount Avenue in Mile End attracted a small crowd.

Next door, many chose the still warm bagels from Fairmount Bagel. And, the ultimate symbol of the holidays, some decided to do their shopping… in their pajamas!
