It’s a bad habit. The French increasingly use their mobile phones while driving. Penalties have no effect on them, including cyclists.

The French are more and more addicted to their telephones. In fact, eight out of ten motorists use it while driving. Three quarters of cyclists also use it while pedalling. These figures are indicative of disturbing behavior. Our vigilance is diminished when we use our telephone. Also, some people don’t just make calls, they also watch series.

In the event of controls, the sanctions are rather strict. Three points are deducted and a fine of 135 euros is payable for a laptop or earphones worn while driving. For road safety associations, punishing more is not, however, a solution. They remind all the same that phoning while driving multiplies by four the risks of accident.
