The man who struck and killed a 7-year-old Ukrainian refugee in the Centre-Sud neighborhood of Montreal pleaded guilty Thursday to a hit-and-run charge.
Aged 46, Juan Manuel Becerra Garcia recorded his response to the accusation at the Montreal courthouse.
Mariia Legenkovska was going to school with her brother and sister when she was hit by a car at the corner of Parthenais and de Rouen streets, on December 13, 2022.
Manuel Becerra Garcia did not stop to help him. He turned himself in to police later that day.
Mariia and her family settled in Montreal in 2022 after fleeing the Russian invasion. Her father, Andrii Legenkovska, was fighting in the Ukrainian army at the time of his death. He came to Montreal to attend his daughter’s burial.
