Manufacturers’ sales fell 3.0% to $ 58.5 billion in September, according to Statistics Canada, which said motor vehicle sales fell due to the continued shortage of semiconductors, which hurt auto production.
The agency says motor vehicle sales fell 35.6% to $ 1.9 billion, the lowest level since May 2020, while sales of motor vehicle parts fell 13.5% to 1.8 billion.
At the same time, higher prices helped sales of petroleum products rise 3.0% to $ 6.7 billion in September.
Total manufacturer sales in constant dollars fell 4.2% in September, indicating that a lower volume of product was sold.
In a separate report, Statistics Canada said wholesale sales rose 1.0% in September to $ 71.3 billion.
The increase came as the miscellaneous subsector grew 5.9% due to a 20.9% increase in sales in the farm supplies industry.
