In Donbass, near the front, a maternity ward welcomes women about to give birth, especially premature babies.

Pregnant Ukrainian women living near the front line. The birth takes place in a cellar or in the basement of buildings, when they were not destroyed by bombing. In Pokrovsk (Ukraine), a maternity hospital was miraculously spared by Russian strikes. Since the start of the war, it has functioned more or less normally. Above all, it is the only one in Donbass to have a neonatology department equipped with incubators.

622 births in 2023

It welcomes women about to give birth prematurely. Two women, eight months pregnant, are worried because their husbands are fighting nearby. To put these future mothers in the best conditions, the maternity ward has adapted. A bomb shelter has been set up and generators provide power in the event of a power outage. Last year, 622 children were born in this maternity ward, mainly premature babies.
