The city of Moscow (Russia) has adopted facial recognition in the metro. Travelers therefore no longer need a card or ticket to pay for their journey.

The facial recognition system has been in operation since the end of the week of Monday, October 18 in 240 stations of the Moscow metro (Russia). Travelers must first download the Moscow metro app, then take a photo of themselves and enter their credit card number to be charged later. Then, for the doors to open, all you have to do is stop in front of a camera, which scans your face.

This system is a national pride. “No metro in the world equals the Moscow metro in terms of diversity, means and payment”, declares Maxim Liksutov, head of the transport department and deputy mayor of Moscow. Payment by facial recognition is voluntary. Ultimately, the authorities hope that it will appeal to 10 to 15% of passengers. The first argument is speed. The goal is to avoid queues in one of the busiest metros in the world, with 6 million daily passengers.
