Moscow (Russia) has cut off gas to two countries, Poland and Bulgaria, on the pretext that they have not paid their bills in rubles, like all Europeans. The European Union denounces blackmail.
No more one cubic meter of Russian gas arrives in the Polish pipes. Russia has indeed cut the floodgates; a blow of pressure from the Kremlin on the economic terrain. Never, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, has Moscow (Russia) taken such measures. Since Wednesday April 27, 8 a.m., the Russian giant Gazprom has ceased its deliveries to Poland, hitherto supplied by the Yamal gas pipeline, but also to Bulgaria, which imports part of its gas via the Black Sea.
By hitting two countries dependent on its gas, Russian President Vladimir Putin is sending a message to the West, without depriving himself of his biggest customers in Europe. According to Poland, this Russian decision had been anticipated. Its gas stocks are thus three-quarters full, and it is counting on two gas pipelines under construction to be better connected to Europe. The European Union has also assured that solidarity will work between neighbours. “The Kremlin has failed, once again, in its attempt to sow division among member states. The era of Russian fossil fuel in Europe is coming to an end”said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
