The Russian telecommunications policeman announced, Thursday, April 7, to ban Google from advertising in Russia. Roskomnadzor accuses YouTube, owned by the American giant, to be “a key platform for the dissemination of ‘fakes’ about the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine, discrediting the Russian armed forces”. He adds that this platform publishes content from“extremists” Ukrainians and censoring Russian state media, whose YouTube channels have been shut down. Russia has adopted a drastic crackdown to control information about its invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, Russian search engines will have to indicate that Google and its affiliates violate Russian law when a search is performed on their names. These measures are much lighter than those that have targeted other web giants for similar charges. Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are thus blocked in Russia. Dissemination of information discrediting the Russian military is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
