It is invisible to the naked eye, but asbestos is indeed present in schools in France. This is revealed by the program Vert de rage, which studied a sample of 20,000 nursery and primary schools. Among them, 28.4% contain asbestos, according to the authors of the survey. In an establishment of Fraisans, in the Jura, no official diagnosis confirms it, but the teaching staff is worried.
“A time bomb”
Very popular in the construction industry in the 1950s, the use of asbestos has been banned in France since 1997. For older buildings, a diagnosis is mandatory. But according to the authors of the survey, only seven out of ten schools would have done so. “It’s a ticking time bomb. At the time, asbestos held up very well, but it has a lifespan of 50 years”, warns Mathilde Cusin, journalist and co-director of the survey. Asbestos fibers are responsible for cancer.
