(New York) More than half a million beds sold at retailers including Walmart and Wayfair are being recalled in the United States and Canada. Some broke during use, leading to dozens of injuries.
The recall affects more than 527,000 Home Design beds in the United States and nearly 56,000 in Canada.
The recall affects several different sizes and models of Home Design’s standard and platform upholstered beds. The Silver Lake, Indiana-based furniture wholesaler says it has received 128 reports in the United States of the beds “breaking, sagging or collapsing” when in use. In 36 cases, the manufacturing defect caused injury to users. In Canada, the company received 22 reports, and four mentioned injuries.
Home Design and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are urging consumers with the now recalled beds to stop using them immediately and contact the company for free replacement slats and side rails.
Consumers can determine if their bed is being recalled by looking at the list of affected models and the corresponding part number, which can be found both on Thursday’s CPSC recall notice and on the website Home Design website. To receive the free repair kit, users must email Home Design photos of the bed or proof of purchase as well as the “legal tag” of the headboard.
The recalled beds, made in Malaysia, were sold on Wayfair, Walmart.com and Overstock.com between July 2018 and November 2023. Prices ranged from $100 to $300.
