The violence in New Caledonia has already caused the deaths of six people in six days. To regain control of the situation, more than 600 gendarmes were mobilized to clear the traffic routes.
To prevent blockades, means are required: backhoe loaders and even tanks are used to clear cars blocking traffic routes. With armored vehicles in the center of Nouméa (New Caledonia), it is the start of a major operation launched by the government. 600 gendarmes are mobilized with one objective: to regain control of the traffic axis which connects the city center of Nouméa to Tontouta airport.
However, the resumption of this strategic axis by the police is not an easy task. “I’m not going to tell you that traffic can be restored, because we’re not there yet”, deplores Louis Le Franc, High Commissioner of the Republic in New Caledonia. According to him, it is difficult to see clearly: “It’s an operation that we will carry out tomorrow, maybe even the day after tomorrow”he explains.
