The number of organ transplants increased last year in France. Plus 2.5% according to figures presented this morning by the Biomedicine Agency. In total, more than 5,000 organs were transplanted in 2023, such as liver, heart, kidneys.

It is kidney transplants that are mainly carried out in France: 3,625 last year out of a total of 5,634 organ transplants. Liver transplants then follow. There were just over 1,300 in 2023. Kidney and liver transplants have almost returned to their pre-Covid-19 level but this is still not the case for heart and lung transplants.

22,000 people waiting for a transplant

Despite these increasing figures, they are increasing at half the rate of the increase in the number of new people registered on national waiting lists. The number of people waiting for a transplant stands at nearly 22,000.

One of the axes of the 2021 transplant plan is to strengthen donations. According to the annual survey carried out by the Biomedicine Agency, 80% of French people questioned are in favor of this collection after their death, but in the event of death the teams face a rate of opposition from relatives in 36% of cases on average. .
