As usual, the Braderie de Lille delights bargain hunters as well as mussel lovers. Nearly 500 tons of mussels will be consumed during this Lille street market weekend.
This is the emblematic dish of the Braderie de Lille: mussels accompanied by fries with beer as a drink. Simple and inexpensive, mussels can be cooked in many ways according to local specialities. In the North, you can’t imagine a Braderie de Lille without this emblematic dish. “A clearance sale without mussels is like a sky without sunshine”, explains Cyril Bazin, owner of La Ducasse.
If these mussels are the delight of Lille men and women, they come from the Netherlands, where they are disgorged, sorted and calibrated before being exported to France. However, they must remain alive and be consumed during the day. In total, 500 tonnes of mussels and 30 tonnes of fries will be consumed during this weekend sale. As for beer, tens of thousands of liters should be sold.
