More than 40,000 people without electricity in Montreal due to a gas leak

A gas leak left nearly 50,000 people without power on the Island of Montreal Wednesday night. Early this evening, Hydro-Québec reported that the number had since gone down, but that 40,471 members are still affected in a quadrilateral formed by Rosemont Boulevard, Notre-Dame Street, De Lorimier Avenue and De Cadillac Street.

Emergency services reported the gas leak to Hydro-Québec, which then “cut off electricity in the area as a safety measure,” Hydro-Québec said. The Crown corporation is unable to provide a specific time of return.

More details will follow.
