More than 40 Juno awards distributed Saturday evening before the gala

Some of Canada’s biggest music stars will take center stage Saturday night in Edmonton for a Juno Awards ceremony before the televised gala.

More than 40 Juno Awards will be presented during the Juno Opening Night Awards, which will be broadcast live on YouTube and CBC Gem from the Edmonton Convention Centre. The event will be hosted by actor and comedian Andrew Phung, star of Run the Burbs, and Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe, a CBC radio host.

Toronto singer The Weeknd is up for six Juno Awards, including Contemporary R&B Recording, Artist and Song of the Year.

Pop singer Avril Lavigne, from Napanee, Ontario, and Calgary newcomer Tate McRae are nominated in five categories. The two singers will compete in two of these categories, for song and pop album of the year.

The industry will salute several other Canadian artists, including Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene, who receives the MusiCounts Inspired Minds Ambassador Award for his philanthropic contributions to music education.

The big Juno Awards Gala will air live on CBC and CBC Gem on Monday and will be hosted by actor and filmmaker Simu Liu. Among the performances of the evening are those of Tate McRae, Tenille Townes and the group Nickelback, inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
