The Monts d’Arrée, in Finistère, are in the grip of a fire which has ravaged 1300 hectares since Monday July 18. The fires are fueled by exceptional drought and record temperatures.

The Gironde is not the only department plagued by flames. In Finistère, a fire broke out in the Monts d’Arrée, Monday July 18. The images are impressive, with walls of flames ravaging the Breton vegetation. In one day, 1,400 hectares have already gone up in smoke. On the ground, 260 firefighters are mobilized to try to stop the fire. Wind plays an important role in the spread of flames. “We really had a spread of fire in several directions”explains one of the firefighters.

The trajectory of the fire being difficult to read, the authorities proceeded to the evacuation of 500 Finisterians. A gymnasium has been set up as a refuge for local residents who can no longer be present at their homes. A resident says: “4 a.m., there was a knock on my door. (…) We all left at the same time (…), and then we arrived here.” The fire shocked residents.
