More than 1,000 people evacuated from the village have been able to return to their homes. “In two days, we didn’t have time to lose our habits, but we were still worried about the house”, he comments. The bakery, the only business in the village, has also reopened.

A relief that the inhabitants of the town of Belin-Béliet (Gironde) do not yet share. Here, there is not a sound, the streets are deserted and the houses are evacuated. Only volunteers and police have the right to enter. Nearly 5,000 residents had to find accommodation solutions, often urgently. A family of six was taken in by a couple of volunteers, making an entire floor available to them. “I’m embarrassed”, admits Jacques Fautous. However, on their faces can be read the relief, and the emotion of experiencing such solidarity.
