The Consumer Protection Office (OPC) announced Monday that the Astrofit Gym Blainville training center and its president, Sarah Anton, pleaded guilty on August 31 to charges brought under the Consumer Protection Act .

At the Business Registrar, businessman James William Awad is listed as the administrator of the training center.

The OPC accused Awad and his business partner of having “carried out health studio activities […] in February and March 2022, without holding the permit required by law.”

The company was therefore ordered to pay a fine of $6,000, while Ms. Anton will have to pay a fine of $1,097.

“In addition, the merchant who operates a health studio must hold a permit issued by the Office and provide a bond of $25,000 for each of his establishments. This bond serves to guarantee compliance with the law and can be used to compensate consumers in the event of closure of the business,” the Consumer Protection Office said in a press release.

This is the second time in less than a month that James William Awad and Sarah Anton have been fined for illegally operating a fitness center.

In September, they were respectively ordered to pay fines of $6,000 and $3,000 for operating the Astrofit Gym RDP, located in east Montreal.
