More electric vehicle models will qualify for the federal rebate

More electric vehicle models will be eligible for the federal purchase rebate, Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced on Friday.

The federal government will increase the maximum purchase price eligible for this rebate next Monday. The rebate will therefore be offered on the purchase of cars with a suggested base retail price of $55,000. More expensive versions of these vehicles will also be eligible, provided the manufacturer’s suggested retail price does not exceed $65,000. SUVs, pickup trucks and vans with a maximum suggested base price of $60,000 and a maximum price with options of $70,000 may also be eligible.

The rebate will be $5,000 for plug-in hybrid vehicles with an electric range of 50 km or more; it will be $2,500 for vehicles with a shorter electric range.

According to the federal government, the program has helped Canadians buy or lease more than 141,000 new zero-emission vehicles since its inception in 2019.

In 2021, new battery electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids accounted for just over 5% of new registration applications in Canada, compared to around 3.5% the previous year. The federal government wants 20% of new vehicles sold to be electric by 2026 and 50% by 2030.
