The recent article The revenge of the “cranks” by bike (The duty, December 30) on the growing popularity of urban cycling in winter underlined this positive response to the problem of the invasion of the automobile in our streets. It is in fact by setting up infrastructures that are safe and accessible in all seasons that we can offer urban cycling as a serious alternative to the automobile for those who want to get around faster than on foot. Otherwise, by abandoning our streets to the automobile, making all other modes of travel less safe, we will only encourage the accelerated growth of the automobile fleet and the incivility of drivers irritated by congestion, a situation pertinently decried by Valérie Plante following the death of little Maria. We must therefore continue to develop the four-season cycle network in order to increase the modal share of cycling in the city, to the detriment of that of the car, and finally achieve the objective of the Vision Zero approach (zero deaths or serious injuries). adopted by Montreal in 2018.
