Last May, two men were tried for shooting a critically endangered raptor that enjoys protected status. Proceedings of this type are increasing in number and are a reminder that harming protected species is not without consequences.

Europe’s largest eagle lies in the snow, its wings folded and bloodied. A female white-tailed eagle was shot dead last February in Isère. She was in the sights of two half-brothers, who shot her for “the beauty of shooting”One was acquitted and the other was given a 4-month suspended prison sentence for destruction of protected species.

Is there a sense of impunity among hunters? Two other people will be tried in August for having once again harmed a bald eagle by poisoning it. However, there are only seven pairs of bald eagles left in France and the species is in danger of extinction. The number of convictions for harming protected species has increased, with 369 in 2023. The environmental code provides for up to 3 years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros. But for many associations, the sanctions are not severe enough.
