The mayor of Sept-Îles, Steeve Beaupré, described as shocking the images of an individual who deliberately killed a moose calf in the Moisie sector.

“We cannot tolerate this kind of behavior, this kind of gesture, which is completely gratuitous and premeditated,” he told TVA Nouvelles on Thursday.

Steeve Beaupré, a former criminal and penal prosecuting attorney, denounced the behavior of the man.

He wants investigators from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and wildlife officers to bring charges against the individual.

“I hope that the Department of Wildlife and Parks will continue their investigation so that criminal charges are laid and also criminal charges. The Sûreté du Québec, according to the latest information, would have met the individual,” he added.

Remember that an investigation has been underway since the images, showing the man driving his van running into the animals, were broadcast on social networks.

A suspect was arrested and a vehicle was seized, while a file will be submitted to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) no later than Friday to see if charges could be brought, confirmed the SQ.

Under the Wildlife Act, killing big game with a vehicle is punishable by a $2,500 fine on the first offense and per count.

Charges could also be laid by the provincial police for cruelty to animals.

If the suspect is charged and found guilty, he could face a prison sentence.

A petition has also been posted online by citizens who want charges to be brought.
