Montreal will tackle the overpopulation of white-tailed deer

After Longueuil, the City of Montreal announces that it will act to reduce the population of white-tailed deer in the east of the island, where the growth of the herd is exponential.

The recommendations of a technical and scientific committee will be revealed Tuesday afternoon, as well as the measures the City will take to tackle the problem.

It is Laurence Lavigne Lalonde, responsible for large parks within the executive committee, who will announce the actions that the administration will take.

Already, in 2021, a report commissioned by the City recommended a reduction in the herd, to keep only between 13 and 19 animals.

An inventory carried out in February 2023 by the Ministry of the Environment made it possible to count 127 deer, which would mean that at least 108 to 114 animals would have to be slaughtered, if the recommendations of this first study are maintained.

The number of collisions between cars and deer has increased in recent years: there have been 126 in five years on the island, including 37 in 2022, which left 5 people lightly injured, according to data from the Society of Deer. Quebec automobile insurance (SAAQ).

Deer mainly live in the Pointe-aux-Prairies nature park, the Grou Coulee and the adjacent golf course, but they can also be seen in the Anjou golf area.
