Montreal is pausing the recruitment process for a new director of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), because it wishes to conduct a public consultation to determine the profile sought for this position.
In a press release, the City underlined the administration’s desire to build “a model of urban security”.
“Public safety is everyone’s business, and the consultation process will make it possible to reflect the aspirations of the population, community groups, SPVM members and young people in the SPVM management selection process,” said Mayor Valérie Plante in a statement.
The City mentioned the recent holding of the Montreal Forum for the fight against armed violence which, it said, reminded us of the importance of consultation. It thus wishes to strengthen the proximity and the bond of trust between the police and the population.
Appointed last week as interim director of the SPVM, Sophie Roy will remain in office until the fall, if the Ministry of Public Security ratifies this choice. Recall that Sylvain Caron announced last month that he was leaving his post in order to retire.
The president of the executive committee, Dominique Ollivier, and the head of public security for the Plante administration, Alain Vaillancourt, will hold a press briefing on the recruitment process for the next director of the SPVM on Tuesday morning.
