Montreal will develop 30 “sponge” parks within two years

Montreal plans to create 30 parks and 400 “sponge” sidewalks on its territory over the next two years. These initiatives aim to reduce the impacts of climate change, the manifestations of which are becoming more frequent.

The City of Montreal will announce Tuesday that it will add around thirty “sponge” parks to the seven already developed on its territory since 2022. The 400 “sponge” sidewalks will total 8,500 m2 of green infrastructure and will allow the retention of the water equivalent of three Olympic swimming pools, estimates the City.

According to the Climate Institute of Canada, every dollar invested in climate change adaptation measures saves between $13 and $15 by reducing the impacts of extreme weather events.

More details to come.
