Montreal | Victims of fatal New Year’s Day hit-and-run identified

(Montreal) A Namibian returning from church and a second man have been identified as the two people killed in a hit-and-run that occurred early in the night of New Year’s Day in Montreal.

Court documents identify the two victims as Michael Chintakis and Augustin Wesley Katimba. Police say the two men were both in their 30s.

The suspect, Antoine Dubuc, 23, was due in court Wednesday to face charges of dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop following an accident causing death and driving with impairment causing death.

Namibia’s ambassador to the United States identified Wesley Katimba in a Facebook post as a member of the Namibian diaspora. Margaret Mensah-Williams wrote that Mr. Katimba was returning from church when he was caught in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.

The ambassador added that Mr. Katimba had just celebrated his birthday the day before, December 31.

The Montreal City Police Department claims that the suspect hit the two pedestrians at high speed before fleeing in his vehicle and possibly on foot.
