Montreal records its hottest day of 2022

If you felt a heat wave outside on Sunday, it wasn’t just an impression. With a temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius, the city of Montreal experienced its hottest day since the beginning of 2022.

For the month of June, it was also the first time that the mercury indicated a temperature exceeding 30 degrees. By adding the Humidex factor, this figure even climbed to 41 degrees, according to data from Environment Canada. Unsurprisingly, a heat warning was issued during the day.

It was the hottest day of the year. We came within a degree of beating the 2003 daily record for a June 26 temperature in Montreal: 33.4 Celsius.

Frédérick Boulay, meteorologist at Environment Canada

Monday should mark the end of such intense humidity and the return of mercury that oscillates within regular seasonal values, around 24 degrees. This should be the case until Friday, when Environment Canada expects to issue a new heat warning. Météo Média estimates that the temperature felt on Friday could reach 39 degrees.

Between May 12 and 14, Montreal had experienced three consecutive days of over 30 degrees. However, they had been significantly less humid than Sunday.

Despite the heat warning issued on Sunday, the month of June 2022 recorded temperatures on average one to two degrees colder than normal for this calendar period, in southern Quebec. “But we will undoubtedly have a return of the pendulum somewhere”, notes Frédérick Boulay.

In the north of the province, towards Nunavik, it is completely the opposite. In this territory, the month of June was “up to 5 degrees” warmer than normal, a considerable difference.

As a preventive measure on days when heat warnings are in effect, Environment Canada recommends “staying hydrated, reducing physical effort for people who have more difficulty enduring these temperatures”. You must also “never leave people or animals in a vehicle” and try to find places to rest in the shade or with air conditioning.
