Montreal pays tribute to the victims of the conflict between Israel and Hamas

Montreal put the flags at its city hall at half-mast on Monday to commemorate the victims of “terrorist attacks and violence in Israel,” said Mayor Valérie Plante.

The latter made the announcement in the morning in a short message published on the social network X, formerly Twitter. The Advisory Center for Jewish and Israeli Relations thanked Ms. Plante on the same platform for “this important expression of solidarity with the people of Israel and the Montreal Jewish community.”

By the third day of the conflict, more than 1,300 people had died in total. On Sunday, Israel declared war on Hamas after the surprise attack launched on Saturday by the Palestinian Islamist movement from Gaza.

The Montreal City Police Service said it pays “very special attention” to places on its territory linked to communities affected by the events. “But I cannot confirm that there is a surplus of staff for that,” said spokesperson Sabrina Gauthier.

On X, Ottawa police stressed on Saturday that the Hamas offensive had an impact on the citizens of the Canadian capital. “We have increased police presence in areas of religious significance, including synagogues and mosques. »
