The 33-year-old driver was driving northbound on Boulevard Pie-IX, with a 34-year-old passenger on board, when he lost control around 6:20 a.m. At the intersection of rue de Charleroi, he first hit the embankment and ended up in a lamp post. The accident caused serious injuries to both men. The oldest succumbed to his injuries Saturday morning in hospital. The driver is in stable condition.

According to the SPVM, alcohol and speed could have contributed to the skid. The driver will have to be met by the investigators.

Police officers specializing in investigation and collision went to the scene to understand the circumstances of the tragedy. Boulevard Pie-IX, which was closed to traffic between boulevard Henri-Bourassa and rue de Charleroi, has been reopened.
