Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante will travel to New York this week on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) Future Summit.
Thursday, Mme Plante will take part in the final meeting of the Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments, to which UN Secretary-General António Guterres invited her last year.
During this meeting, the members of the group will present the summary of their work “which will recommend in particular to the Secretary General and the Member States of the UN to grant cities a formal and permanent status with the main bodies of the UN”, we can read in a press release published by the mayor’s office on Tuesday.
“To continue to prepare the future of their territory and protect the quality of life of their populations, cities must have the support and attention of national governments and international bodies,” said Mr.me Plant, in the same press release.
The Future Summit will take place from Sunday to Monday at the UN headquarters in New York.
The mayor will take advantage of her visit to the American metropolis to participate in the dialogue of French-speaking Ambassadors to the UN on Saturday.
Mme Plante will also inaugurate an economic mission in collaboration with Finance Montréal, “bringing together a delegation of ten financial institutions and Quebec organizations involved in sustainable finance,” states the press release from the City of Montreal.
