Montreal | Man stabbed downtown

A man stabbed following an argument Tuesday morning was taken to hospital. The authorities are on site to clarify the circumstances of this event which occurred in downtown Montreal.


According to our information, an altercation between homeless people broke out on avenue Viger, at the corner of rue Panet.

Officers from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) intervened around 9:30 a.m. with a man in his fifties injured in the chest by a sharp object, confirmed Sabrina Gauthier, spokesperson for the police force. “He was conscious when taken to hospital. We are awaiting feedback from the medical teams regarding his state of health,” said the agent.

The authorities are currently meeting with a witness to demystify the circumstances of this event.

The Centre-Sud district is experiencing a marked increase in violent incidents. The number of assaults recorded by SPVM agents assigned to neighborhood station 22 increased by 28% in 2023. This is significantly more than the Montreal average, which is 12%.

Calls to 911 also reflect the growth of safety problems in the area. Police received 12% more calls in 2023 compared to the previous year.
