This was briefly announced by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) in a press release on Friday, without specifying the identity of the suspect. The latter would have mainly operated at night, using open windows or unlocked doors.

Investigators say they suspect him “also of having stolen a bank card from the locker room of a Côte-des-Neiges fitness center on September 7th”. According to them, the alleged thief “would this time have entered the establishment during opening hours by thwarting the vigilance of the employees”.

It was on September 9, in a commercial establishment in Plateau-Mont-Royal, that the man was formally arrested, barely a few hours after a burglary he may well have committed was reported to the authorities.

“At the time of his arrest, the man had in his possession electronic devices, jewelry and various other stolen valuables”, note the Montreal police, specifying that the investigation which is still in progress “could lead to the filing additional charges.

According to the SPVM, “goods that the suspect would have tried to sell at second-hand dealers” could indeed “make it possible to link him to other thefts”.

The authorities remind citizens that to protect their home from theft, it is recommended that exterior exits be well lit, that doors be locked and windows closed, and that an alarm system be in operation. It is also possible to chisel valuables or install an automatic timer for lighting.

In the event of prolonged absence, “ask a person you trust to pick up your mail, have your driveway and balcony shoveled in winter and have your lawn mowed in summer”, also suggest the police forces.
