[Montréal] Man accused of assaulting girl is fit to stand trial

He was deemed fit to stand trial, but the young man accused of violently attacking a 10-year-old girl in the middle of the street in Montreal will have to be examined again by a psychiatrist.

On Wednesday, Judge Pierre Labelle received a medical report concluding that 21-year-old Tanvir Singh is able to follow his trial and understand what is happening during the legal proceedings.

But the magistrate immediately ordered that he be sent back to the Philippe-Pinel Institute. A psychiatrist will assess whether they can be held criminally responsible for their actions, or if they cannot be due to mental illness.

Last week, he attacked and injured a child’s head and face as she walked home at lunchtime.

According to the police, she suffered serious injuries.

Passers-by intervened on Tricentenaire Boulevard, in the Pointe-aux-Trembles sector, where the attack took place, and police officers who were patrolling the area arrived at the same time. They arrested Tanvir Singh, who is not known to the police.

From the moment of his arrest, they suspected that mental problems could be involved in this savage attack.

The young man faces four counts of assault, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He remains detained pending his return to court scheduled for the end of April.
