Montreal goes into “alert” mode for spring floods

The City of Montreal announced Sunday afternoon that it was switching to “Alert” mode for its flood response plan. Several boroughs and cities in the Montréal agglomeration could be affected by spring flooding.

“An increase in the level of the various waterways of the Montreal archipelago has been observed,” reads a press release issued by the City. The Carillon Generating Station, on the Ottawa River, recorded an exceedance of its minor flood threshold, which should lead to increased flows over the next two days.

It is specified that the sectors likely to experience “flooding of varying magnitude” are those located along Lac des Deux Montagnes, Lac St-Louis and the Rivière des Prairies.

“Every year is a stressful time for local residents. We are ready and will be there to accompany them, ”tweeted the mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante.

“We invite the population living in sectors at risk to prepare to intervene quickly as we do and we ensure that all citizens have the information necessary for their preparation”, for his part indicated the person in charge of public security within the executive committee of the City of Montreal, Alain Vaillancourt.

The City suggests that families establish a family emergency plan as well as an emergency kit to have in their home in the event of flooding. She provides advice on her website on how to prepare your home for such a situation.
