Since 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, dozens of people have been mobilizing against an oil company, near Hinton Avenue in Montreal East, said Raphaël Bergeron, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Service (SPVM).

The demonstrators demand in particular the complete cessation of line 9B of Enbridge, which transports oil from the tar sands of Alberta, explains Guillaume Sylvestre, spokesperson for the Antigone collective.

As the pipeline crosses multiple waterways that flow into the St. Lawrence River, it puts the drinking water of millions of Quebecers at risk.

At the scene, two demonstrators attached themselves to a container blocking the entrance to the wharf of the oil company Valero. Protesters also chained themselves to the top of two filler tubes.

The SPVM is on site to ensure safety.
