Montreal, city of a hundred cones

We were all taken aback, most recently, when Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transportation and Mobility, Ms.me Geneviève Guilbault, as well as the Mayor of Montreal, Mme Valérie Plante, announced, elbow to elbow, that it was over with the omnipresence of orange cones left to do nothing on the public domain. They were given 48 hours to clear.

Mr. Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal and Mr. Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, both almost went off the road by expressing their joy at the only thought of no longer seeing hundreds, even thousands of orphan orange cones hanging around the city unnecessarily on every street corner.

For the average citizen, whose urban environment of the last twenty years has ended up making him believe that these orange nutcrackers were now part of his daily landscape, like lifelong neighbors whom we greet in the morning before leaving for the day, describing his happiness was difficult to express.

We were sorry to jump for joy so quickly, it seems that getting rid of those orange cones is as difficult as getting rid of bed bugs. They are still there, reigning supreme on the road, thumbing their noses at pedestrians, complicating everyone’s mobility at high rental prices.

There must be a solution for Montreal to become a city without cones. What a cul-de-sac!
