Montreal Arts Council | Ellen Gabriel wins the CAM Grand Prix

Mohawk activist and documentary maker Ellen Gabriel won the Grand Prix from the Conseil des arts de Montréal (CAM) on Thursday for her short film Kanatenhs – When The Pine Needles Fall about the Oka Crisis of 1990, but told from the perspective of Indigenous women.

Visibly moved when collecting her prize, Ellen Gabriel first spoke in Kanien’keha before expressing her surprise and gratitude in French. Later, at The Pressshe admitted to still being shaken by all the attention she was receiving.

“One of the objectives of the film was not only to recover the narrative of what happened during the Oka Crisis, because there were a lot of stereotypes, but also to leave a legacy for indigenous communities. Women played an important role in the resistance and we never talked about it. »
