A Montreal place of worship in Ville-Marie was hit by an electrical fire overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) received 911 calls around 2:30 a.m. for a fire alarm in a church on rue Saint-Sulpice, near rue Notre-Dame Ouest.
When the police arrived on the scene, firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) were already trying to control the flames which were quickly falling.
According to initial information, the fire was caused by an electrical problem which caused part of the scaffolding at the building’s construction site to burst into flames.
At least this is what SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils confirmed on Sunday morning, specifying that there was no damage caused to the building.
At the end of the morning, the management of the Notre-Dame basilica stressed that the event would have no impact on the activities planned for Christmas Eve.
“The minor fire which broke out outside the Notre-Dame basilica on the tower restoration site on December 24 was of electrical origin. They did not cause any significant damage and religious activities and celebrations will take place as planned,” it was indicated in a press release.
