The police were called around 1:30 p.m. for an assault in front of a business in the 10e avenue, near boulevard Robert.
The victim was stabbed to the upper body and transported to a hospital, said officer Gabriella Youakim of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). “According to the information gathered, it is a possible labor dispute between the two parties which would have degenerated,” she added.
The suspect, a 21-year-old man, was arrested shortly thereafter. He appeared in court on Friday. The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) had not yet responded to requests for The Press regarding the nature of the charges and the identity of the suspect at the time of this publication.
The American organization Stop Antisemitism shared a video on Twitter on Friday showing a young man punching another in the face with a pair of scissors. The caption and subsequent tweets place the attack in Montreal on Thursday, and identify the victim as a 24-year-old Orthodox Jewish man.
The Press has not been able to confirm the authenticity of the images nor to confirm that it is indeed the same event. The SPVM spokesperson had not seen the video Friday evening, but she indicated that the hypothesis of a hate crime was ruled out.
